What's on Site?—The Medicine Wheel
Our formal herb garden, was dug by hand and planted with love. It hosts a Medicine Wheel, each segment filled with herbs which lend themselves to different body systems (respiratory, digestive, etc.).
Some are familiar, such as lavender and rosemary, but others are less well known such as centaury of which the Elizabethan herbalist Culpepper said, "the herbe is so safe that you cannot fail in the using of it.. it helps those that have the dropsy or the green sickness". One of our favorites is mugwort of which Culpepper said "a very slight infusion is excellent for all disorders of the stomach".
Four themed plots surround the Medicine Wheel:
- A Shakespearean Plot as his plays have many references
to herbs and Sonja's a fan!
- The Culinary Plot contains pot herbs such as dill, coriander, mint, fennel,
lemon verbena, garlic, and tarragon. Their use is a joy and they're
tasty to nibble!
- The Nosegay Plot can lift most anyone's spirit. Nosegays,
made of sweet smelling herbs, were believed to protect from the plague and
Victorian women
carried "tussie-mussies", small bouquets of aromatic herbs and
flowers, as some brides do today.
- A Biblical plot hosts some of the many herbs mentioned in the Bible.
